A man who said he was the foreman of the oil plant came to visit us today. He said he wants to inoculate everyone living near the oil field against some kind of disease.

Oggi è venuto da noi un uomo che ha detto di essere il supervisore della raffineria di petrolio e ci ha spiegato di voler vaccinare tutte le persone che vivono nei pressi del giacimento petrolifero contro una qualche malattia.

In my parents' generation, they tricked our people and stole the land to turn it into their oil field. They must feel guilty about that because they are always trying to help our village now.
When we couldn't get across the swamp, they built a gondola on a rope for us.

Ai tempi dei miei genitori, ingannarono la mia gente e rubarono la terra per trasformarla nel loro giacimento petrolifero. Suppongo che si sentano in colpa, perchè ora non fanno che cercare di aiutare noi abitanti del villaggio.
Quando avevamo difficoltà ad attraversare la palude, hanno costruito una funivia tutta per noi.

Sometimes they'll even give us alcohol from foreign countries. This medicine is probably something like that.
Everyone in our village is glad to receive this medicine, but I don't want it. I don't have a reason for not getting it, I just didn't like the way the foreman looks, that's all.

Alle volte ci portano perfino alcolici che vengono da paesi stranieri. Questa medicina è probabilmente qualcosa del genere.
Tutti gli abitanti del villaggio sono contenti di ricevere la medicina, ma io non la voglio. Non ho motivo di rifiutare, semplicemente non mi è piaciuta la faccia del sovrintendente, tutto qui.

Everyone went to the oil field to get this inoculation. The village is usually never this quiet. The only thing to do today is sleep.

Tutti sono andati al giacimento per farsi vaccinare. Di solito il villaggio non è mai così silenzioso. Oggi non c'è altro da fare che dormire.

April 9
I slept too much during the day, so I couldn't sleep at night, and it was noisy outside. Everyone was talking with serious voices in the middle of the village. All of the children in the village had come down with a fever.

Ho dormito troppo durante il giorno, per cui la notte non sono riuscito a prendere sonno. In più, sentivo dei rumori provenire da fuori. Tutti non facevano che parlare in tono serio nella piazza del villaggio. Tutti i bambini avevano la febbre.

The mothers all drew water to cool their bodies, but it didn't help. By the next morning they were all dead.

Le madri sono andate a prendere acqua per rinfrescarli, ma non è servito a nulla: al mattino erano tutti morti.

In the morning our leader went to the oil field. He wanted to know if they medicine they were given killed the children.

Al mattino, il nostro capo si è recato al giacimento petrolifero perchè voleva sapere se era stata la medicina a uccidere i bambini.

When he came back to the village, he said the children died because they had the disease. He told everyone that they needed to go back for more shots. I didn't want to, but everyone in the village was worried about catching the disease. They forced me to go with them and get the shots.

Quando è tornato al villaggio, ci ha spiegato che i bambini erano morti perchè avevano già contratto la malattia e ha detto a tutti che dovevano tornare per farsi fare altre iniezioni. Io non volevo andare, ma tutti gli abitanti del villaggio avevano paura di contrarre la malattia e mi hanno obbligato ad accompagnarli e a farmi vaccinare.

April 10
People are fighting in the village. All the men are very angry. It might be because all the children died, but I think it's something else.

Ci sono risse nel villaggio e tutti gli uomini sono fuori di sè. Può darsi che sia per la morte dei bambini, ma io credo si tratti di qualcos'altro.

The women just sit around and don't move. I wonder if the disease is spreading?

Le donne si limitano a starsene sedute immobili...
Mi chiedo se la malattia si stia diffondendo.

I couldn't sit still today. It felt like something was moving around inside me.
Outside I saw a man who looked strange. He was naked and had a weapon. His entire body was covered in war paint. It wasn't even a festival day.

Oggi non riuscivo a star fermo. Avevo la sensazion che qualcosa si muovesse dentro di me.
Fuori ho visto un uomo che aveva un aspetto strano. Era nudo e armato. Il suo corpo era completamente rioperto dalla pittura di guerra, e non era neppure una giornata di festa.

I tried to talk to him, but when he turned around, I saw his face...

Ho provato a parlargli, ma quando si è girato l'ho visto in faccia...

He didn't even look human!

Non sembrava neppure un essere umano!

What is happening to the people of my village?!

Che cosa sta accadendo alla gente del mio villaggio?!

April 12
The screaming has not stopped since yesterday. The men are all dressing like our ancestors and fighting each other. Most of the women have died.

Le urla non cessano da ieri. Gli uomini indosano tutti i costumi degli antenati e lottano gli uni contro gli altri. La maggior parte delle donne sono morte.

Head hurts. Fever... Feel angry.

Mi fa male la testa. Febbre... Rabbia.

Saw big man outside window. Very tall.

Visto un uomo alto fuori dalla finestra. Altissimo.

Must be vision.

Dev'essere un'allucinazione.
